Culture
At UCSF we recognize that the culture of the workplace and opportunities for career growth and development are important to all employees. Here are some ways in which we create a culture which values individual employee needs.
Career Development
UCSF offers many programs which support and encourage career growth, such as:
- Opportunities for promotion
- Management assessment and development programs
- Skill training in leadership, management and supervision, finance, business processes, computer-based applications, and individual effectiveness
- Opportunities to work collaboratively on campus-wide initiatives
Supportive Work Environment
“Appreciating hard work, fostering civility and respect, insisting on fairness, valuing differences and teaching tolerance--these are chief among the practices and characteristics we must strive for if we are to create a supportive work environment,” proclaims Chancellor Mike Bishop.
Some formal programs which help to promote a supportive work environment here at UCSF are:
- A code of ethics: a guide for ethical behavior and conduct throughout the campus community
- Problem Resolution Center: a center for the prevention and resolution of workplace conflicts
- Staff Appreciation and New Employee Welcome programs
- Performance incentive programs, which recognize and reward outstanding job performance
- Release time for staff development and training opportunities
- Mentoring programs
Flextime
Flextime is a scheduling arrangement by which an employee may work an alternate schedule within specific limits dictated by the needs of the job, subject to management approval. UCSF encourages departments to support flextime arrangements where they are feasible.
Telecommuting
encourages telecommuting for the mutual benefit of the University and employees. Telecommuting is a voluntary work arrangement whereby an eligible employee with management approval “works one or more days each week from home instead of commuting to a work place.” Work and telecommunication equipment may be owned and maintained by the employee or by the University.
