Sick Leave
DefinitionSick leave is provided to continue the salary of an eligible employee who is absent from work because of illness, disability, medical appointments, and, on a limited basis, in case of family illness or bereavement.
Application
Sick leave shall not be used:
- Prior to its accrual;
- Beyond a predetermined date of separation, retirement, or indefinite layoff;
- In excess of the employee's scheduled hours of work;
- During a temporary layoff, furlough, or leave without pay. However, an employee may use accrued sick leave during a pregnancy or family and medical leave.
Supervisor's Checklist
- Requests for the use of sick leave shall be made in accordance with University or departmental procedures.
- An employee may be required to give at least 30 days advance notice of foreseeable medical needs (e.g., a planned medical treatment).
- If a 30-day notice is not possible, an employee must submit satisfactory proof of inability to work, illness in the family, or bereavement.
