UCSF Smoking Prohibition, with 2 Exceptions, makes UCSF a Smoke-Free Workplace
As the next step in the process of providing a smoke-free environment for faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors, those areas currently designated as sites where smoking is permitted, otherwise known as "Smoker’s Huts", will be eliminated effective July 1, 2006. These sites are located at the Fresno and Mission Bay campuses, as well as the Laurel Heights and Mission Center Buildings. This is consistent with the goal of protecting all who live, work, study, or visit the campus from a major health concern: secondhand smoke. The policy is intended to provide a smoke-free environment on University-owned or leased property, buildings, vehicles and moving equipment. The policy also states that all faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors must observe this smoke-free policy. Supervisors are responsible for enforcing the policy in their areas. Maps of the two remaining Smoking Huts located on the Parnassus and Mt. Zion campuses can be viewed at Maps of Smoker’s Huts at UCSF.
On July 1, 2005, UCSF became smoke-free when it’s no smoking policy was updated to prohibit smoking on UCSF campus grounds. This followed an announcement by Chancellor Bishop stating that UCSF would amend its smoking policy to provide that, with the exception of designated areas for patients and family members, all University-owned or leased property will be smoke-free. Chancellor Bishop’s message can be viewed at: http://ucsfhr.ucsf.edu/policies/university/info.html?x=52533.
As a means of assistance and encouragement to those smokers who may be interested, smoking-cessation resources and programs are available and can be viewed at SMOKING_CESSATION_PROGRAMS.doc. The revised Smoke-Free Policy is available at 550-10 Smoke-Free Workplace. More detailed information can be obtained by going to the online article UCSF: A Smoke-Free Workplace.
