Frequently Asked Questions & Feedback
Answers to questions about the UCSF Careers job applicant site
Do you recommend tailoring my resume and cover letter to each position that I am interested in, or do you recommend using a generic resume and cover letter?
Your resume will be looked at by many different people - often for varying types of jobs. We encourage you to create a generic cover letter and resume. Please make sure that the letter and resume will read well for any type of position that you apply to or are matched to by our recruiters. However, you are able to store up to five resumes and five cover letters in your profile. You may manage these documents through the Resume/CV Manager section found on your welcome page. NOTE: Please be sure review the selected saved resume and cover letter to ensure that is the correct document(s) for the job you are submitting to.
I’m getting error messages, what can I do?
Perhaps your browser settings prohibit third party cookies as a privacy measure. You can either allow third party cookies or add jobs.brassring.com as a website to accept all cookies. Both changes are made via the Tools menu, Internet Options menu item, Privacy tab. We strongly recommend using the latest version of Internet Explorer or Firefox.
How often do you update your position openings on your website?
Our positions are updated daily. Positions posted on the web are current and open.
What is the status of my application? I haven’t been called yet.
Once you complete the online application process, you will receive an email confirmation. Please print it for future reference. If there is a match between your qualifications and the positions for which you apply, your resume will be referred to the hiring department(s). Your resume may also be matched and referred to other positions. Hiring departments may contact you directly and schedule an interview if they consider you competitive after having reviewed your resume. We encourage you to apply for additional positions. Due to the large volume of resumes we receive, Human Resources is only able to determine whether your resume has been reviewed and/or forwarded to the hiring department. Beyond that, we are unable to provide information regarding the status of your application once it’s been forwarded. Typically candidates may experience a minimum of six to eight weeks before hearing a response from a hiring department.
I have submitted my resume electronically, but I would like to also mail a hard copy. Can you please provide me with an address?
We no longer accept hard copy resumes. If you are contacted for an interview, you are welcome to provide an additional formatted resume to the hiring manager.
I am trying to apply for a job with the requisition number ICRL/307330BR. When I punch it in under the req. number for search criteria, the engine comes up with zero matches.
ICRL is an ad code that pertains to a craigslist posting. Please list the appropriate requisition number, in this case 307330BR, in the requisition number field and click submit.
What is “percentage” at the bottom of each job listing
It refers to the percentage of time the position is. For example, 100% is 40 hours per week. 50% would be 20 hours per week, etc.
I am looking for faculty positions, and I am unable to find any openings. Am I looking in the right place?
Please visit UCSF’s Academic Personnel site at http://acpers.ucsf.edu/.
What can I do to ensure all my applications to specific positions are stored in my Resume History?
History of candidate submissions are stored within the resume manager. If you have resumes saved when you apply, you have the option and should use the saved resume from the dropdown menu. You can also save and name a resume from the resume manager function. We only maintain history on resume manager submissions.
I made a mistake on my resume and/or cover letter. How can I make changes to my submission?
Once an application is accepted you are unable to make changes to that application. Please check your submission carefully before completing the process.
I would like to delete a saved resume and/or cover letter. Will that affect my previous submissions to other positions?
Once you’ve completed a submission to a job, the exact resume and/or cover letter that you submitted will stay with that particular job. Whatever changes you make in the resume manager function, will not affect past resume submissions.
Where can I find the salary range for a job that I am interested in?
You can search for salary ranges by visiting http://ucsfhr.ucsf.edu/index.php/staffing/tpp_detail/. In the “Search Option 1: Find by Title Code” field, enter the four-digit job code number that can be found on the job description.
How can I sign up to receive the Employment Opportunities Bulletin (EOB)?
Please visit: http://ucsfhr.ucsf.edu/index.php/jobs/brassring_article/subscribe-to-the-opportunities-bulletin/ to submit your email address.
I received the Employment Opportunities Bulletin (EOB) in an email. Why can’t I find the position on your careers page?
The EOB is sent weekly and only captures positions that were opened a week prior to its mailing. It is a static document of those positions so you may find that a position’s status has changed since the EOB was created. The careers page is the most accurate and up to date source for all open positions.
