Annual June Compensatory Time Off Election Period

The collective bargaining agreements between the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), Coalition of University Employees (CUE), and American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the University provide that departments that offer compensatory time off must offer their research support professional (RX), technical (TX), health care professional (HX), clerical (CX), and service (SX) bargaining unit employees the opportunity to make an election for overtime compensation. The opportunity to choose either pay or compensatory time off (CTO) is made when hired and thereafter during the month of June. Although the contracts covering employees in the CX, RX, and TX units have expired, CUE and UPTE have agreed to allow CTO programs to continue during the status quo period.

For fiscal year 2009/2010, the employee’s election period is June 1, 2009 through June 30, 2009. For any elections made during the month of June, the employee’s election will become effective July 1, 2009.

If employees in the RX, TX, or HX do not make an election during the annual June period, their previous election shall continue. If employees in the CX or SX units do not make an election during the June period, they will receive pay for any overtime worked.

Copies of the election forms may be found on the Human Resources website. Please ensure that employees are provided the applicable form in order to make the election.

If you have questions, you may contact the Labor and Employee Relations Analyst assigned to your department/unit, or you may call Labor and Employee Relations at 476-3905.

New Work Injury Reporting Hotline

Reporting a work-related injury has just become easier. Supervisors, managers, and staff can now call a toll-free number to report any injury. This new reporting service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Of course, employees should continue to promptly inform their supervisor if they have been injured, and, in an emergency, urgent medical care should be sought immediately.

The new hotline will improve efficiency, expedite claims service, and reduce paperwork. Effective immediately, supervisors and employees reporting a work injury should call the following number:

UCSF Implements Data Security Awareness Campaign

UCSF is taking steps to improve the security of confidential electronic data, following a campus-wide review of its data security systems, practices, and policies.

UCSF, a national leader in patient care, health sciences research, and teaching, is committed to protecting medical, personal, and sensitive data of all types - whether it’s information about patients, employees, students, donors, or research subjects.

Last year, UCSF Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD, appointed a task force to develop and implement a data security action plan in the aftermath of a few security breaches, which had the potential of exposing sensitive data and private patient information to the outside world.

UCSF is now implementing that action plan, which contains a series of recommendations based on the findings from the campuswide review. They are:

Serving You: Faculty & Staff Assistance Program

Our “serving you” series reminds you and your staff about the comprehensive selection of services the Human Resources department provides to the University community. We want to keep you informed about the services we provide, as well as reacquaint you with the people who administer them. We encourage collaboration with your department and our office, and welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your staff at any time.

Featured this week:

Faculty & Staff Assistance Program: The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) team consists of licensed mental health clinicians. Our services are voluntary, free, and confidential and include individual counseling, consultation to managers and supervisors, and assisting in the investigation of threats and violence within the workplace (Threat Management Team). Below you will find a detailed explanation of each of our services.

Individual Counseling Services

All of us have problems occasionally, whether personal or work related. Often we can resolve them on our own, but sometimes they persist and may affect our mental and physical health, well-being, work performance, or self-esteem. This is where FSAP comes in. FSAP provides short-term assistance (up to three sessions) and will coordinate referrals to your HMO provider or other community/health care resources, depending on your situation. We offer assessment, counseling, and referral services for a broad range of personal or work-related issues that include:

Consulation to Managers, Supervisors, and Administrators

FSAP provides professional consultation to managers and supervisors of individuals, departments, and workgroups, who have employee-related issues or intra/inter-departmental concerns. Organizational consultion services are provided with a focus on organizational health. Some of the main issues and concerns that FSAP provides consultation for include:

Threat Management Team Services (TMT)

In conjunction with other units within the University, FSAP assists in the investigation of intimidation, threats, and violent behavior within the workplace, pursuant to the University’s Violence in the Work Place policy 150-27. FSAP’s role on the TMT at UCSF is to assess the risk of violence to a particular targeted individual or group and to advise management on how to interrupt escalation and reduce risk. FSAP will also assist those affected by the incident with counseling and referrals. FSAP’s ongoing goal is to promote health and well-being in the UCSF community.

To schedule an appointment, or to further discuss how FSAP can better assist you regarding any of the above, please feel free to contact us at 415-476-8279.
