Proposed Adjustment of Select MSP & PSS Salary Ranges Effective July 1, 2010

Campus Administrators, Managers, and Supervisors:

The UCSF Compensation Committee has endorsed and the Chancellor has approved a proposal to implement an increase of 6 percent to the salary range maximums for Management and Senior Professional (MSP) grades 1 through 5 and Professional and Support Staff (PSS) grades E through 6, effective July 1, 2010. UCSF MSP grades 6 and above are currently aligned with systemwide Senior Leadership Compensation Group (SLCG) grades, and there is no proposal for movement of those ranges at this time. This proposal impacts the described salary ranges only and has no direct impact on the salaries of individual employees.

The 6 percent salary range maximum movement is proposed to address the following issues:

Mandatory Employment Notices & Posters

Federal and State Labor Law regulations require employers to post notice of labor laws in appropriate locations with general access for employees and/or applicants for employment. The At Your Service website includes an updated list of mandatory Federal and State labor laws that must be posted where employees can view them during the normal course of business. Please ensure that these notices are posted in areas used by employees, such as lobby areas, break rooms, and bulletin boards designated for this purpose. Failure to post this information may result in Federal or State penalties for non-compliance.

Use or Lose Furlough Time by August 31

Furlough time is not like vacation time or comp time that can be banked for later use or is paid out upon separation from the University. Furlough time may not be carried over after the systemwide furlough program ends August 31, 2010, so be sure to use your time before it’s too late.

You could also begin sessions for completion of the Supervisor Certificate Program, take only the Performance Management series within this program, or enhance your skill set in Billing and Reporting.

Career Planning Workshops

These workshops were developed to encourage and enable employees to take charge of their own careers. There are four modules, and they can each be taken independently. However, the fourth and last module requires that participants attend the first three. We also encourage employees to attend all the modules to gain the greatest benefit.

Module 2: Development Plan / Resume Writing
Module 3: Networking / Interviewing
Module 4: Resume Critique / Interview Practice (Prerequisite: Modules 1, 2 & 3)

PAM of EMF Series: Billing and Reporting

This course covers the billing for Cost Reimbursable Letters of Credit (LOC), non-LOC, and fixed price awards. An overview of the process flows as well as System resources will be covered. A review of the division of duties and responsibilities of the department and extramural funds will also be explained.

Supervisor Certificate Program

The UCSF Supervisory Certificate Program is a flexible, performance-skills based program of learning designed to provide UCSF supervisors and supervisor aspirants with an opportunity to develop supervisory competencies.

Empowering the Supervisor – This course helps participants learn how to appropriately manage authority to maintain or regain control of situations involving an employee’s non-compliance or insubordination.

EEO Law and Sexual Harassment Prevention for Supervisors – This course is designed to provide you with an overview of equal employment opportunity and nondiscrimination policy. The course will also include required content mandatory for AB1825 compliance for sexual harassment prevention. We will review specific EEO and sexual harassment issues and strategies for ensuring compliance with UC policy and State and Federal Laws.

Performance Management Series (may also take as part of Supervisor Certificate Program)

Setting Performance Expectations – In this first course in the Performance Management series, participants learn how to work individually or collaboratively with staff to identify and communicate meaningful performance expectations.

Coaching for Improved Performance – In this second course in the Performance Management Series, you will learn to recognize and assess performance issues and will practice coaching communication skills to support employee performance improvement and development.

Conducting Performance Appraisals - In this third course in the Performance Management series, you will learn to work with your staff to reflect on progress, to examine objectives and standards of performance, and to set goals for performance and development.

Delegating for Success and Accountability – In this final course in the Performance Management series, participants practice a structured approach to delegation and the communication skills needed to transfer work and to build project commitment.

New Online Resource: Managing Virtual Teams

Regardless of the nature of a team, leaders must possess a standard set of skills to achieve team objectives. However, in virtual team environments, managers need additional leadership skills to be as successful.

This online document will help you understand the role of the manager or leader in a virtual team and how to effectively manage these teams.
