June 26-28, 2007 Nursing Bargaining Highlights
UC Presentation on Medical Plan Bid Process: This week, UC presented CNA with additional information on the university’s medical bid process for 2008. In February 2007, UC requested bids from medical plan providers in order to explore new options for sustaining high quality medical benefits at competitive prices. UC’s priority for the medical bid is to explore ways to manage costs without benefit reductions. UC will continue to consult broadly with various UC stakeholders throughout this process, including Regents, faculty, staff, unions and retirees.
UC In the Process of Collecting Data for Wage Proposal: UC had hoped to provide a comprehensive wage proposal for nurses this week. Unfortunately, it has taken longer than anticipated to gather the necessary information to finalize the proposal. The university understands the importance of wage negotiations and looks forward to providing a complete wage proposal as soon as possible.
NEXT BARGAINING DATES: July 30 - August 1, 2007
UC Goals for a New Contract
- Preserve UC’s ability to provide excellent, cost effective health care services to communities throughout California
- Develop an attractive total compensation package in order to retain and attract talented, well-qualified nurses to UC
- Safeguard the retirement benefits offered through the UC Retirement System
- Provide a high-quality yet affordable health benefits package that addresses the needs of all employees
- Present UC nurses with a choice between the current sick/vacation plans and a new plan that offers increased flexibility
- Reach a comprehensive and mutually beneficial three-year agreement through good faith negotiations without any threat of strikes

UCSF Telecommuting Guidelines
Whenever practical and in alignment with business needs, UCSF encourages and promotes telecommuting from home offices as a tool to enhance a supportive and flexible work environment. Telecommuting is a voluntary work arrangement in which an eligible employee with approval from their department works one or more days each work week from home instead of commuting to a work place. The UCSF Telecommuting Guidelines have been revised for clarification, specifically with respect to the requirement that the Labor and Employee Relations unit review and approve telecommuting arrangements prior to implementation. Effective immediately, departments will no longer be required to seek Labor and Employee Relations approval prior to implementing telecommuting agreements. Departments have the authority to establish telecommuting arrangements in compliance with written guidelines and may consult Labor and Employee Relations on an as needed basis.
For questions, please contact the Labor and Employee Relations Analyst assigned to your department.
