Remember to Use Furlough Time by August 31, 2010

As a reminder, furlough time may not be carried over after the system-wide furlough program ends on August 31, 2010. Employees participating in this program are expected to use all of their furlough days during the Plan term. Furlough time is not like vacation time or comp time that can be banked for later use or is paid out upon separation from the University. Furlough time that is not used as expected during the Plan term will expire on August 31, 2010.

Flexible Spending Account Deadlines Approaching

March 15, 2010 is the last day to incur eligible expenses for the 2009 Health FSA plan year. Health FSA claim forms must be filed for any expenses incurred from 1/1/10 through 3/15/10. (The spending card cannot be used for expenses during this time frame.) Any funds in the 2009 Health FSA account which have not been used will be forfeited.

April 15, 2010 is the last day to file reimbursement claim forms for any eligible Health FSA or Dependent Care FSA expenses incurred for the 2009 plan year. This is also the deadline for employees to provide documentation to substantiate Health FSA card purchases during 2009. Claims must be postmarked or faxed by the April 15 deadline. The mailing address and the fax number are on the claim form.

Account balance information or information about any documentation requirements can be obtained on the CONEXIS website or by calling the CONEXIS toll-free automated phone system at 1-800-482-4120.

Restart of Contributions to Your Retirement Plan

As you may have read, the restart of employer and employee contributions to the University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP) will begin in approximately mid-April of this year. What does this mean to you?

If you are a UCRP member (to be a member, generally you must be appointed to a career position), the amount (approximately 2 percent of pay for most employees) you are contributing to the Defined Contribution Plan (DCP) will be redirected to UCRP. So, at this time, you will not see a change to the net earnings in your paycheck.*

The redirection of contributions from DCP to UCRP will begin with May earnings and be reflected for monthly paid employees on the June 1 paycheck and bi-weekly paid employees on the May 12 paycheck.

The UCRP employer contribution rate will be 4 percent of pay.

For more information, including FAQs, please read Gary Schlimgen’s article on The Restart of Pension Contributions. Gary is the UC systemwide Director of Pension and Retirement Programs.

*For represented employees, this change is subject to the University’s collective bargaining obligations.
