START Program Modified to Allow for 5 Percent Reductions

Last year the University implemented a two-year Staff and Academic Reduction in Time (START) Program, effective July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2010, to enable non-probationary career staff and academic appointees (except those in faculty and student academic titles and Postdoctoral Scholars) an opportunity to voluntarily reduce their working time and corresponding pay but still accrue vacation, sick leave, and UCRP service credit in accordance with their pre-reduction appointment. The program has now been modified to lower the minimum allowable reduction in time from 10 percent to 5 percent. This change is effective March 1, 2009 for employees who are paid monthly and March 8, 2009 for employees who are paid bi-weekly. The applicability of this modification to represented employees is dependent upon agreement by the relevant union.

START program materials will be updated to reflect this change. For a description of the process for implementing reductions under the START Program at UCSF, visit the HR website. Staff questions related to this policy may be directed to Mark Gottas at . Academic questions may be directed to Cynthia Leathers at .
