Eligible Individuals Pay Only 35% of COBRA Premium

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) allows employees and their eligible family members to continue employer group health coverage for a limited time if they would otherwise lose the coverage due to certain qualifying events such as separation from employment. The premiums for COBRA coverage are generally high because members pay the full cost for coverage. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) temporarily reduces the premiums for COBRA for eligible individuals that lose coverage based on an involuntary separation from employment. Under ARRA, eligible individuals pay only 35 percent of the premium for COBRA for up to nine months.

The recently passed Department of Defense Appropriations Act 2010 (2010 DOD Act) amended ARRA extending the period to qualify for the COBRA premium reduction through February 28, 2010, and increasing the maximum period for receiving the subsidy to 15 months.

CONEXIS, the University’s COBRA administrator, has provided the appropriate notices to eligible individuals. If you have questions, please contact CONEXIS at 1-877-722-2667 (Monday through Friday 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST).
