UC Announces Medical Plan Options for 2008
You may recall a few months ago UC Health & Welfare Systemwide Administration announced they were putting our medical plans out to bid in order to explore new options. The bidding process is nearly complete and the winning medical plans have been announced! Please note that some employees may be required to select a new medical plan during Open Enrollment. Medical Contribution Bands (MCB)
Your medical plan monthly cost depends on the plan, the coverage tier you choose, and your Medical Contribution Base (MCB). The MCB, which is derived from your payroll information, is part of the University’s strategy to maintain choice and affordability of health plans. Medical plan rates are tiered (based on your MCB) so that the cost you pay for medical insurance is somewhat proportional to your pay rate.
Over the last several months, the University of California (UC) has been studying the inclusion of shift differential earnings in the calculation of the annualized salary for determination of placement in the Medical Contribution Bands (MCB). UC has now determined that some individuals may have had their MCB placement impacted by the inclusion of the shift differential. For calendar year 2007, affected employees will be individually notified and placed into a lower pay band -without utilizing any earned or potentially earned shift differential in the calculation. The University will also refund the difference between the premiums in the higher pay band and the newly calculated lower pay band. The University will no longer include the shift differential in pay banding eligibility determinations beginning calendar year 2008.
