Compensatory Time Off Election
The collective bargaining agreements between the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), Coalition of University Employees (CUE) and American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the University provides that departments that offer compensatory time off must offer their RX, TX, HX, CX and SX represented employees the opportunity to make an election for overtime compensation. The opportunity to choose either pay or compensatory time off (CTO) is made either when hired, or thereafter during the month of June.
For fiscal year 2008/2009, the employee’s election period is June 1, 2008 through June 30, 2008. For any elections made during the month of June, the employee’s election will become effective July 1, 2008.
If an UPTE (RX, TX, HX) represented employee does not make an election during the annual June period, the employee’s previous election shall continue. If a CX or SX represented employee does not make an election during the June period, the employee will receive pay for any overtime worked.
Copies of the election forms may be found on the Human Resources website. Please ensure that employees are provided the applicable form in order to make the election.
If you have questions, you may contact the Labor and Employee Relations Analyst assigned to your department.

Get Motivated to Walk
Everyone can benefit from increased physical activity, including walking. Only 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day (brisk walking) five days a week can reduce the risk of many diseases from heart attack to stroke to hip fractures….and much more.
Benefits include:
- Controlling blood pressure: Physical activity strengthens the heart so it can pump more blood with less effort and less pressure on arteries.
- Decreasing risk of heart attack: Studies demonstrate that brisk walking for three hours a week is associated with a 30%-40% lower risk of heart disease in women.
- Managing weight: Combined with health eating, physical activity is key to any plan for long-lasting weight control.
- Lowering risk of stroke: Brisk walking for an hour a day, five days a week can cut the risk of stroke in half for men, according to a Harvard study.
- Protecting against hip fractures: Studies have shown that consistent activity diminishes the risk of hip fractures in both men and women.
Take your first steps towards a healthier lifestyle today and sign up for the UCSF Walking Program!
For more information on the health benefits of exercise, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides additional information here.
